My Story

Very pleased to meet you! Thank you so much for visiting. I am Crystie Burnett and I sincerely welcome you to -  "Crystie's" Coffee House and Bistro Inc. It has been quite the journey to be here today.  Lifelong, really. I love coffee! I dream about coffee! No, really, I seriously do. As a mother of twin six year old girls, step mom of two young adults, three fur babies and wife to a big grumpy guy, my appreciation for a nice hot cup of coffee has only grown over the years.

I have been in the Foodservice Industry for over 22 years. I have been a baker, chef, bar tender, sous chef, caterer, waitress, hostess, assistant manger for a grocery outlet, creator of soups, sauces and a Barista. My dream has always been to open my own coffee shop and bistro. In the summer of 2008 I was fortunate enough to visit Italy.

Walking around Rome, Florence and Sienna I had to try all the different Bistro's and their Coffee's. Some of the best Coffee I drank was actually in the train stations while waiting for my next adventure. I was hooked.  I knew I wanted to start my own place. Life throws in curveballs as we all know. I got married had children and put my dreams on the back burner.

Then walks in 2022! The Covid-19 Pandemic although still present, has been reduced to a murmur. My husband is set to retire in the next couple years after 26 years in Law Enforcement, 21 of those being with the Calgary Police Service. One day he simply said to me, "I have lived my dream for the last 26 years, it's your turn." I was so excited and so scared. The next thing you know we are working on a business plan and checking out retail spaces.

Together we then decided to look at wholesalers.  As much as we would of loved to go to countries around the World and purchase beans directly. At this start up time of my business it just makes more sense to speak to wholesalers. So the visits began. Ultimately, ending with Phil and Sebastian. I felt like that little voice inside my head said this was the one. At Phil and Sebastian they do not use a broker or harvest beans from a specific region. They actually know farmers personally all over the World.  They buy directly from them so there is no middle man or mixing of beans from a region. The farmers names are advertised on the coffee bags themselves and I will showcase them in the Bistro. We walked into our meeting with Phil and Sebastian and an old friend walked up.  Sam! I couldn't believe it. Sam and I had worked together many years ago at the Calgary's Farmer's Market. He is now the Sales Manager at Phil and Sebastian!

The coincidences were overwhelming. I knew at that point this would all work out. I'm still nervous and have all sorts of worries (my husband says it's because I'm a perfectionist) but I can promise you that every visit to my Coffee House and Bistro will be an enjoyable experience. We at Crystie's Coffee House and Bistro Inc. "are a locally owned Calgary-based coffee shop where each day starts with fresh beans and comfort in a cup."

See you all soon! - Crystie
